How to Pick a Candle Fragrance

How to Pick a Candle Fragrance

There is a wide variety of candle fragrances available in the marketplace.

From luxury brands, high-end department stores, independent makers and small business owners to budget supermarkets, it can be difficult for consumers to make informed choices about which candles are best suited for their homes.

However with a little bit of research and scent-testing, you may find that a new candle fragrance is worth exploring.

Discover your candle's true fragrance.

Candles are made of a variety of ingredients, including pure essential oils and perfume oils, mixed with wax at the right temperature. The quality of candles can vary depending on what the company's goal is. Basic comparisons include:

Paraffin Wax vs Soy Wax

Premium fragrance oil vs Cheaper perfume oil

Paraffin wicks vs Unbleached natural wicks

The list continues…

TIP: If you are in a shop, look at the bottom of a candle to see if it is labeled. If it is packaged in a box, check the ingredients list on that label. In luxury stores ask store employees for information about their product ingredients.

Steps to take to get started

The best way to choose a fragrance is to actually smell it, not just read about it. Do not be afraid to take in a deep breath and inhale, think about what you are smelling as you are doing so. Some things you may want to consider as you sniff your candle:

  • Is the fragrance pleasant to you?
  • Do you feel a sense of connection with it when you wear it?
  • Would you be happy to wear it? (The vast majority of fragrances used in candles are also used in perfumes.)

TIP: If you cannot physically smell the candle, take stock of your senses. If you focus on the seasons, which bring changes to your senses, you will be able to evaluate a candle's fragrance.
